Step 1: Duplicate you base(Layer>Duplicate Layer) and the set to Screen 100%. I put mine on 30% because my base doesn't need that much of light. You can put yours lower than 100% if it doesn't need much light.
We make the base a little lighter to make it look better when we finish the icon.
Step 2: Make your base black and white by Desaturating it(Image>Adjustments>Desaturate) or Gradient Map(Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Gradient Map) When using the gradient map, be sure that your Foreground color is Black and the Background it White. Though, I prefer Gradient Map than Desaturate.
Step 3: Create a new Curves layer(Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Curves)
At RGB: Point 1- Output: 65
Input: 84
Point 2- Output: 175
Input: 166
It doesn't make that much of a difference but its not optional.
Step 4: Create a new Levels layer(Layer>New Adjustment Layer> Levels)
At RGB: Input Levels: 56,1.15,255
Output Levels: 0,235
It makes the negative part of the picture which is black more darker. Also the skin tone isn't that light anymore.
Step 5: I chose this: texture. Set it Linear Burn in 100% opacity.
then you're done!
